Bio

Nuno’s musical journey started at the age of 13 in his hometown Porto (Portugal.) Influenced by childhood friends who formed a band (even though no one knew how to play a musical instrument,) he decided to be the guitarist in the band. Next, he started studying Classical guitar in a local music school.
Later, at the age of 17, he formed his first band “Bê de Blues” with his brother Luís on bass and Mário Costa on drums. They entered the local music scene right away; it was a covers Rock/Blues band that performed in local clubs.

At 19, he became interested in more music styles such as Hard Rock and Pop music. He formed a new band “Porto Rock,” with influences by Whitesnake, Van Halen, Winger, Dave Lee Roth, Rod Stewart,David Bowie, and many others. Inspired by his new band, Nuno decided to pursue a career in music; this led him to more serious studies. In 1996, after finishing high school, he left the band and moved to Barcelona (Spain) to study at “L’ Aula de Música Moderna Y Jazz,” largely because it was a BIN school
(Berklee International Network), and they had the same teaching methods used at Berklee.

Studying in a school with students from all over the world, he was completely emerged in music seven days a week. He soon realized the importance of learning other music styles to be able to make a living, he studied Jazz, Blues, Pop, Rock, and Latin. He studied with many top musicians like Paco Salas, Marcelo Valente, Tolo Grimaldi, Clodulfo Nuñez, Horacio Fumero, Gaby Ardebol and many others, graduating in 1998.

During his time in Spain, he discovered Flamenco music, he met Manuel Granados, one of the most recognized Flamenco guitarists in Spain, and decided to study a bit of Flamenco guitar. That venture ended up turning into years of study.

In 1998, Nuno came back to his hometown Porto, travelling to Spain every month to finish his Flamenco studies. He graduated in 2006 from Conservatori Superior de música del Liceu (Barcelona) with a degree in Flamenco guitar. At the same time, he was working in Portugal as a professional musician He played
concert halls, casinos, local clubs, and events. His performances included six years with the “Corleone Big Band” (Swing orchestra), the Nuno Monteiro Trio (Jazz/Fusion), and solo performances (Flamenco guitar.) He collaborated with musicians such as Arnaldo Fonseca, Carlos Araújo, José Alberto Reis, Paulo
Filipe, Diana Basto, Luís Monteiro, Tó Torres, Arlindo Silva, Carlos Alves and many others.

In 2006, he decided to move again to Barcelona to pursue new goals in music. He was hired as a music teacher at L’ Aula de Música del Conservatori del Liceu (the same school he graduated from.) He taught electric guitar, combos of many different styles (Rock, Pop, Blues, Jazz,) guitar labs, and music theory. He
prepared several students to enroll in Berklee College of Music in Boston.

 

In 2007, he was invited to join forces with the famous Portuguese singer José Alberto Reis to record a live DVD. He also joined the band as the guitarist for 4 years, traveling between Portugal and Spain constantly.

In 2007, he was invited to join Stage Entertainment in Spain to perform “Mamma Mia” the musical in Barcelona, covering 1st and 2nd guitar on different days. Being able to play both guitars, he was invited in 2009 to go on tour with the show for 2 years, covering 40 different Spanish cities, performing in theatres for more than 2 million people and more than 1000 shows.

After Mamma Mia, he joined the company Dagoll Dagom to be the guitarist for a new musical named “Cop de Rock” at teatre Victoria in Barcelona which was a huge success.

Since 2015, he has been working for Princess Cruises as a house band musician, performing more than 500 shows a year, playing with entertainers from all over the world.He collaborated with artists such as
Steve Larkins (Mercury Rising,) pianist Kim Purling, John Bressler, Alison Ward, Dave Dimuzio, Travis
Turpin, Donna Campbell (Dolly Parton tribute,) Chaeza Figueroa (Whitney Houston tribute,) and many others. Part of his cruises work included Jazz sets, Solo sets and Big Band sets. He travelled the world and has been in 53 different countries so far.

Nuno is a very versatile musician; he likes many different styles although his first love is still Rock music.
His long list of influences/inspirations include John Scofield, Steve Vai, Pat Matheny, Andy Timmons, Guthrie Govan, Manuel Granados, Al Jarreau, Paco de Lucia, Robben Ford, Joe Satriani, Scott Henderson, Frank Gambale, Vicente Amigo, Marcus Miller, Jamiroquai, and Van Halen.
He also has BA Honours in Creative Music by the university of Falmouth in England.
